I wanted to let you know about a campaign the Ploughshares Fund just launched; Rediscover Mother’s Day – RediscoverMothersDay.org.
You may or may not know that Mother’s Day in America has some pretty progressive roots. In fact, it was originally called Mother’s Day for Peace. It was founded in the years after the Civil War by Julia Ward Howe, who made history by fighting to end slavery in America and to give women the vote. Ploughshares’ Rediscover Mothers Day campaign aims to put peace back in the holiday. It’s not just an opportunity to learn the true, historical meaning of Mother’s Day, but also to celebrate the important work of the many moms who are following in the footsteps of Julia Ward Howe and working on the front lines to make the world a safer and more peaceful place.
We are also encouraging sons, daughters, husbands and friends to honor their mothers this year with a gift of peace, instead of or in addition to the usual chocolates or flowers. The gifts received by the Ploughshares Fund will be redistributed to the smartest and most innovative people and organizations building peace around the globe. We’ll even send a card and, some cases, the flowers, too. (And the best part is that a group of generous women – all moms themselves — has offered to match every donation dollar for dollar.)
We also have a fun e-card that people can send their mothers and others to share the history of Mother’s Day. Check out our site www.RediscoverMothersDay.org and spread the word. And help us put the peace back in Mother’s day!
Sincerely,
Deborah Bain
